About Organisation

The British Ecological Society (BES) is the world’s oldest ecological society, founded over a century ago to advance the understanding of ecology and its role in addressing global challenges. With a global membership across more than 120 countries, BES works at the intersection of science, policy, and public engagement. Through its journals, networks, and evidence-based advocacy, the Society supports policymakers, researchers, and practitioners. BES is committed to advancing ecological science, embedding ecology in decision-making, nurturing inclusive collaboration, promoting sustainability, and inspiring public action through a deeper appreciation of nature.

About the Grant

The BES Outreach and Engagement Grants provide funding of up to £2,000 to support creative and impactful activities that engage public audiences with ecological science. The grant supports outreach, public engagement, and science communication initiatives that highlight the relevance of ecology, ecological careers, and practical environmental action. Projects may take diverse formats, including in-person events, digital engagement, or physical resources. Priority is given to innovative approaches that stimulate dialogue, encourage behavioural change, build interdisciplinary collaboration, and strengthen the capacity of others to communicate ecology effectively.

Who can Apply?

Applications are open to individuals, teams, and organisations across all experience levels, provided the lead applicant is a current BES member. The lead applicant must oversee project delivery and submit the final report. Projects must be completed within 12 months and be aimed at non-academic public audiences with clear, direct interaction. Applicants may be based anywhere globally. Projects must demonstrate links to the research community. Funding is not available for staff salaries, school-only curriculum delivery, or projects limited to one or two schools without broader public engagement.

How to Apply?

Applicants must apply during the designated application round and submit a proposal outlining objectives, audience engagement, format, and impact. Projects should align with BES aims and demonstrate innovation, public interaction, and relevance to ecological science. Applications are reviewed competitively by the Grants Committee, and funded applicants must submit a satisfactory final report upon project completion.

Application Deadline

The application deadline for the BES Outreach and Engagement Grants is 10 March 2026. Applications submitted after this date will not be considered.
