The Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University is a world-renowned living museum and research institution dedicated to the study and conservation of woody plants. Spread across 281 acres in Boston, it maintains one of the most comprehensive collections of temperate trees and shrubs, with a strong focus on species from eastern North America and eastern Asia. About the Grant
The Arboretum Research Scholar Award is designed to support scholars in advancing original research that meaningfully engages with the Arnold Arboretum’s unique resources. The award helps researchers initiate or strengthen their research programs by funding project-related and travel expenses. Preference is given to scholars who plan to be in residence for part of their research, enabling collaboration within a leading academic environment. By supporting innovative studies across scientific disciplines, the grant aims to foster long-term research development, academic connections, and impactful contributions to plant science and related fields.
Who can Apply?
Applications are open to scholars from all academic backgrounds and career stages. Early-career researchers and visiting scholars are especially encouraged to apply. Applicants should propose research that directly utilizes the Arnold Arboretum’s resources, including its living collections, laboratories, archives, or grounds. Candidates must demonstrate the academic readiness and capability to carry out the proposed research. Faculty members, independent researchers, and scholars affiliated with academic institutions are eligible, provided their work aligns with the Arboretum’s mission and available research infrastructure.
How to Apply?
Applicants must submit an online application including a cover letter, research statement, project timeline, research budget, curriculum vitae, and two letters of recommendation. The research statement should explain the project goals, methodology, and use of Arboretum resources. All materials are reviewed through a competitive selection process based on merit, feasibility, and relevance to the Arboretum’s collections and facilities.
Application Deadline
Applications for the Arboretum Research Scholar Award are accepted during the annual submission window, which closes in early February. Late or incomplete applications are not considered.
