About Organisation
Established in 1997, the Alberta Conservation Association (ACA) is dedicated to conserving Alberta’s rich fish, wildlife, and natural habitats while promoting outdoor recreation. ACA works to ensure that Albertans can continue to enjoy and connect with the province’s natural beauty through sustainable practices. The organization’s initiatives encourage citizens to engage with nature — from fishing, hunting, and birdwatching to photography and exploration — nurturing a culture of respect for biodiversity.
Beyond recreation, ACA focuses on research, habitat protection, and educational outreach, ensuring that conservation remains a shared responsibility. Its mission is rooted in maintaining ecological balance, preserving natural heritage, and fostering awareness about Alberta’s living resources. Through partnerships with communities, researchers, and conservationists, ACA strengthens the link between scientific research and on-ground conservation, helping shape a sustainable future for Alberta’s ecosystems and its people.
About the Grant
The ACA Grants in Biodiversity program supports graduate-level research that advances understanding and conservation of Alberta’s biodiversity. It funds studies in ecology, conservation biology, wildlife management, and related social sciences to protect the province’s flora, fauna, and habitats. The program aims to increase knowledge of Alberta’s natural heritage, nurture skilled Alberta-based conservation biologists, and encourage research that contributes to practical conservation outcomes.
Since its inception, the program has awarded over CAD 6.6 million to more than 620 graduate students worldwide, supporting research rooted in Alberta’s ecosystems. While applicants may study at any university, their thesis research must focus on Alberta’s biodiversity. Many past recipients have pursued impactful careers in environmental science and remain active contributors to conservation efforts in the region. The grant not only provides funding but also helps build Alberta’s next generation of environmental leaders.
Who can Apply?
The ACA Grants in Biodiversity are open to graduate students (Master’s or Ph.D.) conducting Alberta-based research in biodiversity, ecology, or conservation biology. Applicants must be the primary authors of their proposals; supervisors may provide feedback but cannot write the application. The research must directly contribute to the understanding or conservation of Alberta’s natural habitats, wildlife, or ecosystems.
Eligible applicants can be enrolled at any recognized university worldwide, provided their fieldwork or research focus is within Alberta. Priority is given to projects that demonstrate strong scientific merit, practical relevance to conservation efforts, and alignment with ACA’s mission and values. Each applicant must ensure that their proposal meets both ACA’s guidelines and their university’s internal research submission processes.
The program emphasizes student-led research, mentorship, and practical conservation impact. Proposals undergo a rigorous review by ACA adjudicators who assess clarity, innovation, feasibility, and contribution to Alberta’s biodiversity.
How to Apply?
Applications open October 15, 2025, and close December 1, 2025. Students must complete and submit Application Form Part A and Part B, ensuring supervisor signatures and university approvals. All submissions must reach ACA before the deadline. Applicants are encouraged to review program guidelines, sample proposals, and adjudicator advice before applying.
Application Deadline
Applications for the ACA Grants in Biodiversity must be submitted between October 15, 2025, and December 1, 2025. Late submissions will not be considered.
