DataCite is a global community dedicated to ensuring research outputs and resources are openly available and interconnected to promote knowledge sharing across various disciplines. By facilitating the discovery and reuse of research data, DataCite helps make research more effective through its provision of metadata that links diverse outputs such as data, samples, images, and preprints. As a community, DataCite supports the creation and management of persistent identifiers (PIDs) and offers services that improve research workflows, making it easier to discover, connect, and reuse valuable resources. About the Grant
The Global Access Fund (GAF), part of DataCite’s Global Access Program (GAP), was created to increase global access to research outputs, particularly in regions underrepresented in the open science landscape. The GAF, supported by the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, offers financial aid to promote both outreach and infrastructure development. This fund enables organizations in Africa, Latin America, the Middle East, and Asia to leverage DataCite’s infrastructure services, improving the discoverability of research in these regions. GAF supports projects that increase awareness and adoption of open science infrastructure, build capacity through training, and develop resources such as webinars, podcasts, and tutorials. Funding also goes toward integrating DataCite’s services with local systems, helping to create new tools, infrastructure, and services to support open science.
Who can Apply?
The Global Access Fund (GAF) is open to representatives of non-profit stakeholders within the research ecosystem, such as research institutions, associations, national research and education networks (NRENs), government agencies, and service providers. Applicants must be based in Africa, Latin America, the Middle East, or Asia, and must have authorization to apply on behalf of their organization.
Applications are open to both DataCite members and non-members. Preference will be given to organizations in lower or middle-income countries, as well as to new organizations and projects that have not previously received funding. While current awardees can apply, their applications may be given lower priority. Each organization may submit up to two applications: one for outreach and one for infrastructure development. Applications must align with GAF’s goals of enhancing global research accessibility and adoption of open science infrastructure.

Applicants are encouraged to attend one of the upcoming webinars, where more information about the fund’s goals, scope, and evaluation process will be shared, along with a Q&A session.
