The World Food Programme (WFP) is a United Nations humanitarian organisation focused on combating hunger and supporting vulnerable communities affected by food insecurity, conflict, disasters and climate-related shocks. In Burundi, WFP responds to food insecurity and climate-related vulnerabilities while supporting approaches that connect emergency assistance with longer-term recovery and resilience. Through this opportunity, WFP seeks qualified partner organisations capable of delivering emergency food assistance in the Butanyerera area of Kirundo Province. Partners will contribute to humanitarian response while supporting disaster preparedness, sustainable resource management and community cohesion.
About the Grant
The WFP Burundi Emergency Food Assistance opportunity seeks qualified partner organisations to support drought-affected populations in the Butanyerera area of Kirundo Province. The intervention aims to provide immediate food assistance to 39,614 people over 60 days, involving approximately 1,140 metric tons of food. Alongside emergency assistance, the programme incorporates climate resilience, disaster risk reduction, sustainable natural resource management, community preparedness and social cohesion. The initiative follows a Humanitarian–Development–Peace Nexus approach, linking immediate humanitarian needs with longer-term recovery and resilience. This opportunity is particularly relevant to organisations experienced in food security, drought response, humanitarian assistance, climate-related emergencies and community-based resilience programmes.
Who can Apply?
The opportunity is intended for organisations capable of implementing emergency food assistance and resilience activities in the targeted Butanyerera area. Applicants should demonstrate a strong operational presence in the targeted communes, at least three years of relevant experience, and proven capacity to implement emergency or food assistance programmes. Organisations should have strong financial management systems, effective internal controls, adequate logistical and operational capacity, and experience responding to climate-related shocks. Relevant experience in drought response, food security, nutrition, disaster risk reduction, community resilience and humanitarian programming is valuable. Previous experience working with WFP or other humanitarian agencies may strengthen an applicant’s proposal and demonstrate relevant delivery capacity.
How to Apply?
Eligible organisations should first assess their operational presence, relevant experience, financial systems and capacity to work in Butanyerera. Prepare an Expression of Interest explaining the proposed activities, beneficiaries, food distribution arrangements, staffing, logistics, monitoring, accountability and risk management. Clearly connect identified needs with activities, outputs and expected results. Include relevant organisational experience, local capacity, resilience measures and a realistic, cost-effective implementation approach before submitting according to WFP’s applicable instructions.
