It provides science-based solutions to sustain marine resources and empowers communities, students, and educators to engage in ocean stewardship. With a mission centred on restoring ocean health, the Foundation leads innovative programs that highlight the importance of marine biodiversity and inspire collective action for a healthier planet. Its initiatives aim to make ocean conservation a global priority.
About the Grant
The Science Without Borders® Challenge is an annual international art competition that promotes ocean conservation by engaging students creatively. The 2026 theme, “Microscopic Marine Life,” invites participants to illustrate the vital role of tiny marine organisms—such as phytoplankton, zooplankton, bacteria, and protists—in maintaining ocean and planetary health. The contest encourages young artists to showcase how these organisms support marine ecosystems, oxygen production, nutrient recycling, and climate regulation. Open to students aged 11–19 worldwide, the Challenge awards scholarships up to $500 for outstanding artwork, fostering environmental understanding and empowering youth participation in global ocean protection.
Who can Apply?
The competition is open to international students aged 11–19 who are enrolled in primary or secondary school, including homeschool equivalents. Participants must submit original artwork aligned with the yearly theme and follow all submission guidelines. College or university students are not eligible. Entries are evaluated in two age categories—11–14 years and 15–19 years—with prizes awarded separately for each group. Applicants must ensure their submissions reflect the theme of microscopic marine life and demonstrate creativity, accuracy, and clarity. Students under 13 require parental consent. All entries must be submitted individually by the stated deadline.
How to Apply?
Students must complete the online entry form, upload a clear image of their artwork, and submit all materials before the deadline. Applicants should ensure their artwork clearly reflects the theme “Microscopic Marine Life.” Those under 13 must provide parental consent. Participants are encouraged to review the application tips and write a strong artist’s statement linking their artwork to the theme. Only one entry per student is allowed.
Application Deadline
All entries for the Science Without Borders® Challenge must be submitted by March 2, 2026, with no exceptions. Late submissions will not be accepted.
