About the Grant

  • The JournalismAI Innovation Challenge is a nine-month programme for small and medium-sized news publishers to experiment with AI technologies.

  • Focus areas include misinformation detection, new storytelling formats (mobile, video, audio), and improving revenue or audience growth through AI.

  • Projects can be early-stage or completely new ideas; teams must develop a working prototype by the end of the programme.

  • The challenge will support up to 12 organisations in the 2025 cycle.

  • Applicants may request either US$ 50,000 or US$ 100,000.

Who can Apply?

  • Small and medium-sized news publishers.

  • Must have a digital presence and be operational for at least 12 months.

  • Should already be exploring AI technologies in their newsroom.

  • Not eligible: government-owned or politically affiliated publishers.

How to Apply?

  1. Submit a detailed project proposal outlining objectives, innovation, budget, timeline, and expected impact.

  2. Applications are reviewed by an independent committee based on innovation, feasibility, and long-term value.

  3. Selected teams receive funding, mentorship, and peer-learning opportunities for nine months.
