The Department of Science and Technology (DST), under the Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India, was established in May 1971 with the vision of advancing science and technology in the country. DST serves as the nodal department responsible for formulating policies, coordinating national programs, and promoting innovative research in various scientific fields. Its mission is to foster innovation, strengthen research infrastructure, and encourage scientific talent to contribute to India’s socio-economic development. The department funds and implements multiple research initiatives and international collaborations to ensure India remains at the forefront of global scientific advancement. Through bilateral and multilateral programs, DST promotes partnerships between Indian researchers and their global counterparts, enabling knowledge exchange and skill development. One of its flagship collaborations is the Raman–Charpak Fellowship, designed to deepen Indo-French scientific cooperation by facilitating the exchange of doctoral and master’s students.
About the Grant
The Raman–Charpak Fellowship honors Nobel Laureates Prof. C.V. Raman and Prof. Georges Charpak, symbolizing India-France scientific collaboration. Jointly funded by DST, Government of India, and the French Institute in India (IFI), the program enables Indian PhD students and French PhD/Master’s students to conduct part of their research in each other’s countries. Implemented by the Indo-French Centre for the Promotion of Advanced Research (CEFIPRA), the fellowship aims to enhance research capabilities, foster new collaborations, and encourage scientific and cultural exchange. Participants gain exposure to advanced research environments and methodologies while strengthening bilateral academic ties. Fellows can undertake research for a duration of 2 to 5 months in recognized universities or research institutions. The program benefits participants by expanding their academic perspectives, facilitating international networking, and promoting innovative research across disciplines. This opportunity encourages young researchers to integrate global scientific approaches into their doctoral and master’s work, contributing to both personal growth and institutional collaboration.
Who can Apply?
The fellowship is open to PhD students from India and France and Master’s students from France.

Indian applicants must be Indian citizens residing in India, registered for a PhD at a recognized institution, and currently in their 2nd or 3rd year. Their host institution must be in France.

French applicants must be citizens of France, registered for a PhD or Master’s degree, and their host institution must be in India.

French Master’s students enrolled in Master 1 (and planning their visit during Master 2) or already in Master 2 are eligible.

All applicants must be under 30 years of age as of 1 April 2025.

Applicants must secure prior approval from their home institution and have consent from a host supervisor in the partner country.

Candidates already supported under CEFIPRA projects or holding permanent positions are not eligible.

Required documents include a research plan (up to 5 pages), CV, recommendation letters, PhD synopsis, NOC (for Indian applicants), and a valid passport.
How to Apply?
Applications must be submitted online via the CEFIPRA portal. Candidates should upload all required documents, including a detailed research proposal, CV, recommendation letters, and host institution consent. Only complete applications submitted online will be considered. Incomplete or late submissions will not be accepted.
