The Whitley Fund for Nature (WFN) is a UK-based charity supporting grassroots conservation leaders across the Global South. Established in 1993, WFN has awarded over £24 million to 220 conservationists in more than 80 countries, helping protect ecosystems, wildlife, and local livelihoods. Guided by its Patron, HRH The Princess Royal, and Ambassador Sir David Attenborough, WFN champions locally driven, science-based conservation that empowers communities and creates lasting environmental impact worldwide.
About the Grant
The Whitley Awards 2026 celebrate and fund mid-career conservation leaders in the Global South who are driving impactful, community-based wildlife conservation projects. Winners receive £50,000 to scale proven initiatives rooted in scientific evidence and local engagement. Along with funding, awardees gain global recognition, mentorship, and access to an international conservation network. The program emphasizes leadership, measurable impact, and sustainability to inspire long-term environmental stewardship.
Who can Apply?
Applicants must be nationals of eligible Global South countries (non–High Income Economies) leading locally registered NGOs or community-based conservation projects. Projects must be science-driven, community-centered, and demonstrate past success. Applicants should have strong communication and leadership skills, work with local stakeholders, and show measurable outcomes and long-term sustainability. Start-up or pilot projects are not eligible. Applicants must also be able to communicate in English without a translator.

Applications for the 2026 Whitley Awards are open and close at midnight GMT, 31 October 2025. Eligible conservationists must register on the Whitley Awards application portal to receive login details. Once registered, applicants can complete and submit their proposals online, ensuring all eligibility and project evidence criteria are met before submission.
