About Organisation
The Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center (Shorenstein APARC) at Stanford University is a leading hub for research, education, and policy engagement on critical issues shaping the Asia-Pacific region. Within the center, the Asia Health Policy Program (AHPP) plays a pivotal role in promoting comparative research and analysis on health systems, healthcare policies, and broader determinants of health in the region. The program was established to strengthen academic understanding and policy-oriented solutions to pressing health challenges across diverse contexts, with particular attention to low- and middle-income countries. APARC has long been recognized for cultivating global thought leaders and advancing knowledge that bridges academia, policy, and practice. Its work emphasizes evidence-based approaches, interdisciplinary perspectives, and capacity building among emerging scholars. By offering postdoctoral fellowships and engaging in collaborative research, AHPP seeks to empower the next generation of researchers to generate practical insights for addressing health disparities, strengthening healthcare delivery, and informing public policy. Beyond academic research, the program contributes to global dialogue on health equity and sustainable development by fostering connections among academics, policymakers, and practitioners in the Asia-Pacific and beyond.
About the Grant
The Asia Health Policy Program Postdoctoral Fellowship provides an opportunity for outstanding early-career scholars to pursue original, policy-relevant research on health and healthcare policy in the Asia-Pacific. Specifically focused on low- and middle-income countries, the fellowship supports interdisciplinary inquiry that addresses urgent health challenges while shaping evidence-based policy decisions. The fellowship runs for a minimum of 10 months, beginning in fall 2026, and requires the selected fellow to be in residence at Stanford University. During the fellowship period, the scholar will undertake independent research, present findings in center seminars, and actively contribute to APARC’s publications and policy engagement initiatives. Applicants from diverse academic disciplines—including public health, public policy, economics, sociology, demography, political science, law, medicine, and health services research—are welcome to apply, provided their research contributes to practical solutions in health policy. In addition to intellectual engagement, the fellowship offers financial support with a competitive salary and a dedicated research allowance. The program’s structure ensures both academic rigor and professional development, offering the fellow access to Stanford’s resources, networks, and collaborative environment. Through mentorship and opportunities for publication, the fellowship fosters impactful scholarship aimed at advancing health equity and sustainable policy reform across the Asia-Pacific region.
Who can Apply?
The fellowship is open to scholars who have recently completed their doctoral degrees and are committed to advancing health policy research relevant to the Asia-Pacific. Applicants must have a PhD awarded within three years prior to the start of the fellowship or an MD awarded within six years. For the 2026–2027 fellowship cycle, the degree conferral deadline is June 30, 2026. Candidates must demonstrate expertise in disciplines connected to health and public policy, including but not limited to economics, public health, sociology, demography, anthropology, political science, medicine, health services research, and law. A strong commitment to policy-relevant and evidence-based research is essential. Applicants are expected to undertake an independent research project that contributes to contemporary health or healthcare policy debates of high importance to low- and middle-income countries in the Asia-Pacific. They must also be able to commit to full-time residency at Stanford University for the duration of the fellowship, actively participating in seminars, workshops, and the center’s publication program. Strong research skills, an ability to communicate findings clearly, and readiness to engage in interdisciplinary collaboration are important eligibility criteria. The fellowship seeks motivated scholars with a vision to shape policies and practices addressing health challenges in the region.
