About Organisation

The Lewis Center for the Arts at Princeton University is dedicated to cultivating rigorous artistic practice as a form of research, discovery, and innovation. Rather than viewing the arts as a diversion or simple self-expression, the Center emphasizes the role of creativity in interrogating established norms and exploring under-examined territories. It offers a diverse range of classes and programs in Dance, Creative Writing, Theater & Music Theater, Visual Arts, and the interdisciplinary Princeton Atelier. These programs encourage students and practitioners alike to approach art-making as a scholarly pursuit—one that asks difficult questions and generates fresh insights. By fostering an environment that values both discipline and experimentation, the Lewis Center nurtures artists who seek to push boundaries and redefine creative possibilities. Its mission is not only to enhance artistic expression on campus but also to connect creative work with broader social, cultural, and intellectual currents, thereby inspiring meaningful contributions to the field of arts and beyond.

About the Grant

The Hodder Fellowship is awarded annually to writers and artists of exceptional talent and potential, offering them the opportunity to pursue independent projects during a year-long residency at Princeton University. Designed to support individuals who demonstrate extraordinary creative promise, the fellowship emphasizes future potential over past performance. Fellows may include composers, choreographers, visual artists, writers, translators, and other innovative creators or humanists. While many successful applicants have published a first book or achieved comparable recognition in their field, the fellowship primarily seeks those capable of producing significant new work. The fellowship provides “studious leisure,” allowing recipients to focus exclusively on their projects without teaching obligations. Each Fellow receives a stipend of $93,000 for the 10-month residency, along with access to Princeton’s resources and a dynamic creative environment. The program is intended as a catalyst for major artistic achievements and groundbreaking contributions across diverse artistic disciplines.

Who can Apply?

The Hodder Fellowship is open to artists and writers of outstanding promise, including but not limited to composers, choreographers, performers, visual artists, translators, and creative humanists. Applicants are chosen primarily for their potential to create transformative work, rather than solely on past accomplishments. Most successful candidates have achieved initial recognition in their fields, such as publishing a debut book or producing equivalent professional achievements. Importantly, the fellowship is not designed to support academic study or projects leading to an advanced degree. Individuals of all nationalities are welcome to apply; U.S. citizenship is not a requirement. However, those who have previously received a Princeton Arts Fellowship are ineligible to apply. The program is best suited for independent practitioners who are prepared to dedicate a year to advancing their creative practice without the commitments of teaching or pursuing formal academic qualifications.

How to Apply?
