Thinking Outside the Pipe: Comparison of Non-invasive, Non-destructive Condition Assessment Technologies for Distribution Pipe

Organisation Name:

The Water Research Foundation (WRF)

Grant Amount: up to $250,000

Application Deadline:

November 21, 2024

About Organisation

The Water Research Foundation (WRF) is a prominent nonprofit educational organization dedicated to advancing the science of water for its subscribers and the broader water sector. As a 501(c)(3) entity, WRF funds, manages, and publishes vital research focused on the technology, operation, and management of various water systems, including drinking water, wastewater, reuse, and stormwater. Through its research efforts, WRF aims to enhance water quality and improve public water services, addressing the evolving needs of the community.

About the Grant

The WRF grant targets the challenges utilities face in assessing the condition of distribution pipelines, typically ranging from 4” to 12” in diameter. Traditional assessment methods often require large equipment, which may not fit within all pipeline sizes, resulting in significant community disruption. To address this, the grant encourages the evaluation of low-cost, non-invasive pipeline condition assessment technologies, such as advanced acoustic wave-reflection methods and three-dimensional electromagnetic imaging. These innovative techniques aim to provide utilities with valuable insights into the integrity of their distribution systems, thereby improving decision-making regarding pipeline renewal and replacement while minimizing unnecessary expenses and community impact.
