About the Grant
The Sharon Begley Science Reporting Award, established by CASW, recognizes mid-career science journalists for their exemplary reporting, commitment to mentorship, and dedication to advancing the field of science journalism. The award comprises a career prize and a grant of at least $20,000, which is provided to help the winner undertake a significant reporting project. It is named after Sharon Begley, a pioneering science journalist known for her depth, precision, and storytelling abilities. The award aims to empower journalists to pursue important stories that advance public understanding of science and its impact on society.
Who can Apply?
Candidates must be experienced science journalists with at least 8-10 years of experience in the field, including work in print, online, audio, or video reporting on science, health, environment, and technology. Applicants must demonstrate substantial contributions to science journalism through published work. The award is open to journalists worldwide who have contributed to outlets that cater to international audiences. Current CASW board members, staff, contractors, and their households are ineligible. The award can only be won once, but applicants can enter multiple times.
How to Apply?
Candidates must submit work samples, a cover letter, a resume, and a project proposal. The work should highlight their best reporting in science journalism. The project proposal should outline a significant reporting project, demonstrate its viability, and include a simple budget. Letters of support from senior colleagues or editors are also required. Entries should be submitted between January 1 and April 30 each year.
