The Small Business Innovation Research Initiative (SBIRI) is a program designed to support early-stage research and development in biotechnology by small businesses and startups. The initiative facilitates the development of innovative products and technologies by providing financial assistance for research projects. SBIRI aims to advance ideas from the proof of principle stage to the point of validation and scale-up, thereby accelerating commercialization efforts and fostering a culture of innovation in the biotech sector.
Who can Apply?
Eligible applicants for SBIRI include small businesses, startups, and limited liability partnerships (LLPs) incorporated under the Companies Act, 2013. Proposals can be submitted independently or in collaboration with academic institutions. A minimum of 51% of the company shares must be held by Indian citizens. Applicants must demonstrate adequate in-house facilities for project implementation or be incubated in recognized facilities. A solid track record in research, innovation, and the potential for significant societal impact is essential for eligibility.

To apply for the SBIRI grant, eligible organizations should prepare a detailed proposal outlining the project objectives, methodology, and expected outcomes. Submissions must include relevant documentation, including the organization’s registration details, project timeline, and budget estimates. Proposals can be submitted online as per the specified guidelines.
