About Organisation

The International Climate Initiative (IKI) is a climate and biodiversity funding initiative of the German Federal Government. Through its international funding programmes, IKI supports projects that address climate change, protect biodiversity, conserve natural carbon sinks, and strengthen adaptation to environmental challenges.

IKI Small Grants is designed to support local and regional organisations that can implement practical climate and biodiversity projects. Alongside financial assistance, the programme provides capacity development to strengthen participating organisations’ ability to plan and manage environmental initiatives.

About the Grant

The IKI Small Grants 2027 call is intended to support local and regional organisations developing projects that contribute to climate action and biodiversity conservation. The eighth call for proposals has a thematic focus on Nature-based Solutions, which use the protection, sustainable management, and restoration of ecosystems to address environmental and societal challenges.

Eligible projects may address ecosystem restoration, biodiversity protection, climate adaptation, greenhouse gas mitigation, or the conservation of natural carbon sinks. Activities should demonstrate how the proposed intervention will contribute to environmental outcomes and benefit the communities or ecosystems concerned.

The programme offers funding between €60,000 and €200,000. Projects generally run for 12 months to two years, and the requested funding must not exceed the applicant organisation’s average annual revenue over the preceding three years.

Who can Apply?

Eligible applicants include nonprofit organisations and qualifying private companies pursuing non-profit objectives through the proposed project. Organisations must be based in an official development assistance (ODA)-eligible country and must have been operating for at least three years.

Applicants must also demonstrate an average annual revenue of €60,000–€500,000 over the preceding three years. They need appropriate accounting systems, dedicated accounting staff, and financial controls that meet the programme’s requirements.

Government organisations, individuals, and one-person organisations are not eligible. Projects must be implemented at a local, subnational, or national level rather than as multi-country projects.

Indian organisations should verify the country’s eligibility under the current call and confirm that they meet all financial and organisational requirements.

How to Apply?

Interested organisations should visit the official IKI Small Grants website and review the funding information and application guidelines when the new call opens. The initial stage involves submitting information for an eligibility assessment. Organisations confirmed as eligible will subsequently be invited to prepare a detailed project proposal.

Applicants should prepare an outline of the environmental challenge, the proposed Nature-based Solution, project activities, expected outcomes, organisational experience, and financial information. The detailed proposal must follow the official programme requirements.
