About Organisation

The Pulitzer Center, founded in 2006 by Jon Sawyer, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing quality journalism on underreported global issues. With a bold vision to be a leading force for consequential and innovative reporting, the Center serves as a crucial platform that connects journalists, educators, and the public. It supports thousands of journalists and educators in more than 80 countries, helping them reach tens of millions of people each year through impactful stories and strategic audience engagement. The Center believes that journalism can mobilize society and create meaningful change by fostering dialogue, encouraging public awareness, and influencing policy. It funds in-depth investigative projects, facilitates educational programs, and promotes community empowerment. By amplifying diverse voices and supporting storytelling across various media platforms, the Pulitzer Center aims to uncover systemic challenges and promote collaborative solutions. Its mission reflects a deep commitment to journalistic integrity, transparency, and the transformative power of storytelling in addressing pressing global issues.

About the Grant

The Pulitzer Center’s global reporting grants provide crucial financial support for journalists to pursue in-depth, high-impact stories that might otherwise go untold. These grants are open to international applicants and are designed to cover core reporting expenses. The program encourages ambitious and innovative journalism across all media formats—print, photography, audio, video, and multimedia—especially stories that engage diverse audiences and push boundaries in storytelling. There are no restrictions on topic or geographic location, making this grant a flexible option for journalists working globally. Awards typically range from $5,000 to $10,000 but may vary based on the needs and scale of the project. Funding is available for hard reporting costs such as travel, local partners, translators, and drivers, but not for applicant stipends or institutional overhead. Projects with strong editorial backing and commitment from news organizations are particularly encouraged. The Pulitzer Center is especially interested in proposals that combine investigative depth with multimedia innovation. The ultimate goal is to foster impactful journalism that leads to policy change, greater public understanding, and empowered communities.

Who can Apply?

The Pulitzer Center global reporting grant is open to all journalists, including staff and freelance reporters, photographers, radio/audio producers, video journalists, and documentary filmmakers from any country. Applicants at all stages of their careers are encouraged to apply—from veteran journalists with a history of published work to emerging reporters seeking a platform for their first major project. The Pulitzer Center values diverse voices and seeks applicants from a broad range of ethnicities, nationalities, and backgrounds. The selection process is competitive but inclusive; persistence is welcomed, as past recipients have often been successful after multiple submissions. While there are no restrictions on the topic or reporting location, applicants should propose compelling, underreported stories that can achieve broad impact. Collaboration with news outlets that can amplify the story through multimedia and interactive components is highly recommended. Projects should reflect journalistic integrity, strong storytelling skills, and a realistic budget. The Center does not cover personal stipends but will consider local reporting partner or logistical costs.

How to Apply?

Applicants must submit a 250-word project summary, a detailed publication plan, budget estimate, three work samples, three references or recommendation letters, and a curriculum vitae. Letters of interest from editors or news outlets are encouraged. An optional extended project description may also be included. All documents must be in English.
