About the Grant

The Elisabeth and Amélie Fund supports Belgian organizations working in Africa, Latin America, and Asia to improve access to safe water and sanitation through local partnerships. The 2025 funding cycle focuses on school sanitation projects, ensuring that students—especially girls—can continue their education in a clean and safe environment.

The grant encourages initiatives that enhance hygiene awareness among teachers, students, and parents while promoting the sustainable management of sanitation facilities. Key components of eligible projects include:

  • Installation of latrines, preferably ecological systems tailored to local conditions.
  • Hand hygiene facilities, such as water access points or innovative sanitation solutions.
  • Educational programs on water conservation, hygiene, and environmental sustainability.
  • Long-term maintenance strategies to ensure the continued effectiveness of sanitation systems.

Projects that incorporate ecological sanitation solutions (e.g., ECOSAN toilets) and innovative waste management techniques are highly encouraged. By funding such initiatives, the Elisabeth and Amélie Fund aims to create lasting improvements in school hygiene, ultimately fostering better health outcomes and increased school attendance rates.

Who can Apply?

The grant is exclusively open to Belgian organizations that collaborate with local partners in Africa, Latin America, and Asia. To be eligible, organizations must:

  • Work closely with on-the-ground partners and ensure their active involvement in all project phases.
  • Demonstrate a clear and sustainable strategy for implementing and maintaining sanitation systems in schools.
  • Address water accessibility, hygiene education, and sanitation improvements as core project goals.
  • Encourage community engagement, ensuring the participation of teachers, students, and parents in hygiene education.
  • Propose projects that integrate ecological and sustainable solutions, such as eco-friendly latrines and waste recovery methods.

Applications from individual applicants, non-Belgian organizations, or projects without local partner involvement will not be considered. Projects must showcase scalability, sustainability, and measurable impact on school sanitation and hygiene.
