Grant Amount: up to $15,000 USD

Application Deadline:

30 April 2025

About Organisation

Micronutrient deficiency, often termed “hidden hunger,” poses a severe public health challenge globally. It affects the health and development of one in two children and two in three women worldwide, limiting their potential and burdening health systems. This crisis stems from inadequate intake of essential vitamins and minerals such as iron, zinc, folate, iodine, and vitamin A. The effects are not only immediate—impacting survival, health, and quality of life—but also long-lasting, hampering the productivity and economic growth of nations. As global issues like climate change and unstable food systems persist, the threat of micronutrient insecurity is projected to intensify.
The Micronutrient Data Innovation Alliance (DInA), through collaborative efforts, works to address these challenges by enhancing data-driven decision-making and policy design. Their mission focuses on improving the global micronutrient data ecosystem, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, by supporting initiatives that drive innovation, inform policy, and improve public health outcomes.

About the Grant

The Micronutrient Data Innovation Alliance (DInA) has launched the second round of its Small Grants Program to support country-led efforts focused on strengthening the data ecosystem around large-scale food fortification (LSFF). With grants of up to $15,000 USD available, this initiative targets low- and middle-income countries aiming to generate actionable data that enhances LSFF program design, implementation, and scale. Despite LSFF being a cost-effective and widely endorsed strategy for tackling micronutrient deficiencies, data gaps continue to hinder its full potential.
This year’s call particularly encourages participation from National Fortification Alliances (NFAs) or organizations collaborating closely with NFAs. Proposed projects should aim to improve data availability, coverage assessments, and policy-relevant analytics. This includes evaluating compliance metrics, exploring existing data to shape better policies, and promoting regional cooperation on fortification efforts. LSFF has already made significant global progress, with over 147 countries adopting salt iodization, 94 mandating grain fortification, and more than 30 fortifying edible oils. Through these grants, DInA seeks to enhance the reach and quality of such programs, ensuring that fortified foods effectively reach vulnerable populations and contribute to long-term nutritional improvements.

Who can Apply?

This grant opportunity is open to organizations and stakeholders based in low- and middle-income countries, as classified by the World Bank. Applicants must be affiliated with an institution—such as government bodies, academic institutions, non-profit organizations, or other relevant stakeholder groups—committed to advancing large-scale food fortification (LSFF) initiatives.
To be eligible, the applicant must be an active member of the Micronutrient Data Innovation Alliance (DInA). Membership is a prerequisite and ensures that the organization is aligned with DInA’s mission of enhancing data-driven policies in nutrition. Interested applicants can join DInA prior to applying.
Additionally, the grant prioritizes projects that are policy-oriented and focused on improving the LSFF data ecosystem. Organizations with existing involvement or close collaboration with National Fortification Alliances (NFAs) are highly encouraged to apply, given NFAs’ crucial role in coordinating LSFF strategies at national and regional levels. Ideal applicants should demonstrate a strong track record or clear potential in using data to drive nutrition-focused policies, particularly in areas like compliance monitoring, data analysis, and collaborative fortification efforts. This grant offers a significant opportunity for organizations committed to tackling micronutrient deficiencies through fortified food systems and evidence-based policymaking.
