About the Grant
The Special Research Fund (BOF) Doctoral Scholarships support PhD “sandwich” trajectories for promising doctoral candidates from Global South countries. Selected scholars conduct half of their doctoral research (24 months) at Ghent University and the remaining 24 months at a partner university in the Global South. Ghent University funds the 24-month research period in Belgium, while candidates must secure full funding for the research conducted in the South. The program encourages research relevant to the North–South context and strengthens long-term institutional partnerships.
Who can Apply?
Applicants must be nationals of selected Global South countries. Applications must be jointly submitted by the candidate, a Ghent University supervisor, and a supervisor at a partner university in the Global South. Only degree-seeking PhD students intending to obtain a (joint) PhD at Ghent University are eligible. Candidates must be at an early stage of their PhD, with at least 36 months of research remaining as of 1 October 2026. There are no field restrictions, but preference is given to research relevant to the North–South context.
How to Apply?
Applications must be submitted electronically in English by 17 February 2026. Proposals should be jointly prepared by the candidate and both supervisors before submission.
Application Deadline
