About Organisation

Rainforest Trust is a globally recognized conservation organization dedicated to protecting the world’s most threatened tropical and subtropical ecosystems. Established in 1988, it works in close collaboration with non-profit organizations, Indigenous Peoples, and local communities to safeguard critical habitats that support biodiversity and mitigate climate change. Over the years, Rainforest Trust has awarded more than $361 million to around 315 partners, facilitating the creation and expansion of over 400 protected and conserved areas. Collectively, these initiatives have protected over 57.8 million acres of land, with ongoing projects targeting an additional 80 million acres. The organization’s mission is centered on conserving areas of high ecological value, protecting endangered species, and empowering local communities to manage their natural resources sustainably.

About the Grant

The Rainforest Trust Protected or Conserved Area Creation Awards aim to support conservation efforts that establish or expand protected or conserved areas across tropical and subtropical regions. The grant provides financial and technical assistance to projects that protect critical habitats, safeguard endangered species, and contribute to climate resilience. There are two main types of awards: Feasibility Awards, which offer smaller grants (typically $10,000–$20,000) to assess conservation potential, and Protected or Conserved Area Creation Awards, which fund the formal establishment of new conservation zones. These grants may support initiatives involving land purchase, land titling, designation, or other recognized protection mechanisms. Each project is evaluated individually, ensuring tailored support that aligns with ecological priorities and community needs.

Who can Apply?

Legally registered non-governmental organizations, Indigenous Peoples, and community-based organizations are eligible to apply. Applicants must be authorized to work in the project’s country and demonstrate a clear objective of creating or expanding protected or conserved areas. The proposed areas should currently lack legal protection and be significant for biodiversity conservation, containing endangered species, high-integrity tropical forests, or climate-critical ecosystems like mangroves or peatlands. Projects must have demonstrated support from relevant government authorities, local communities, and Indigenous groups, including adherence to Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) principles. A sustainable management plan or system must be in place to ensure long-term protection and responsible resource use. Projects may involve community land tenure recognition, land purchase to prevent habitat loss, or the establishment of marine protected areas.

How to Apply?

Applicants must first confirm their eligibility, submit a concept note at least four months before the deadline, and then complete the full application process. Collaboration with Rainforest Trust continues throughout project development.

Application Deadline

Applications for Protected or Conserved Area Creation Awards of $250,000 and above must be submitted by March 1, 2026.
