About Organisation

Since 2004, the Gulliver Travel Grant has been offered annually by the Speculative Literature Foundation (SLF) to support writers exploring the realms of speculative literature. The SLF fosters and uplifts creative works that delve into fantastical and speculative themes, ranging from hard science fiction to magical realism. By offering various grants and opportunities, the organization seeks to empower writers in their creative pursuits, assisting them in conducting in-depth research or completing impactful projects. SLF’s initiatives prioritize fostering diversity, imagination, and a vibrant literary community by supporting projects that contribute to the growth of speculative literature as a genre. Through its grants, SLF continues to make meaningful contributions to the literary world by bridging creativity and opportunity.

About the Grant

The Gulliver Travel Grant is a financial resource to assist writers of speculative literature in conducting non-academic research. Each year, the grant provides $1,000 USD to help cover travel expenses, including airfare and lodging, for domestic or international research trips. The grant supports projects across speculative literature genres, from science fiction and fantasy to ghost stories, horror, and magical realism. Applicants are evaluated based on the interest and merit of their projects. Recipients must submit a brief report and an autobiographical statement about their research and writing experience, which may be shared publicly. Past recipients can reapply after two years but are given lower priority to encourage opportunities for new writers.

Who can Apply?

The grant is open to writers working within the diverse spectrum of speculative literature, which includes science fiction, fantasy, horror, and other genres featuring imaginative or fantastical elements. Applicants may be emerging or established writers, and previous publication credits are not mandatory. The submitted project must be speculative in nature and involve travel for non-academic research, with trips scheduled any time in the following year. Writers who have won the Gulliver Travel Grant in the last two years are eligible to reapply but will be considered a lower priority to allow opportunities for other applicants. All applications must include a writing sample and a project description.

How to Apply?

To apply, provide a cover letter detailing your project, a speculative writing sample, and a bibliography (if applicable).

Application Deadline
