The Contrapuntal is an independent non-profit publication committed to delivering rigorously researched, accessible, and factually accurate journalism from a ground-up perspective. Inspired by Edward Said’s concept of contrapuntal reading, the publication examines the intertwined histories of colonizers and colonized, offering a nuanced approach to complex global issues. With a focus on political economy, migration, ecology, and culture, The Contrapuntal prioritizes people-centric stories, emphasizing voices often silenced and unpacking the structures that perpetuate such silencing. The platform rejects “objective truth” storytelling and false balance, instead aiming to critique oversimplified narratives, particularly those affecting the Global South. By uniting researchers, journalists, activists, artists, and critical thinkers, The Contrapuntal strives to provide diverse perspectives on contemporary global issues.

About the Grant

The Asia Endangered Apes Story Grants 2026 support journalists investigating the threats facing orangutans and gibbons across Asia while highlighting effective conservation solutions. The programme funds stories covering habitat destruction, wildlife trafficking, forest fragmentation, conservation policies, protected areas, and One Health approaches that connect human, animal, and environmental wellbeing. Journalists are encouraged to present fresh perspectives and underreported issues that can raise awareness and influence decision-makers. In addition to financial support, selected grantees receive editorial mentorship and social media storytelling guidance, enabling them to produce impactful environmental reporting that contributes to wildlife conservation and biodiversity protection.

Who can Apply?

Applications are open to journalists and media professionals from Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam. Freelance journalists, staff reporters, television, radio, print, online, and community media professionals are all eligible to apply. Individual journalists as well as collaborative reporting teams may participate, although one lead applicant must submit the proposal. Applicants should demonstrate experience or interest in environmental or conservation reporting and submit proposals in English. A signed editor’s support letter, relevant work samples, and a detailed project budget are required. Early-career, Indigenous, rural, and women journalists are strongly encouraged to apply.

Applicants must complete the online application through the Earth Journalism Network portal by creating or logging into their account. The application should include a detailed story proposal, budget justification, editor’s support letter, and two published work samples or reporting examples. Journalists should clearly explain the story’s significance, reporting plan, expected impact, and publication strategy while ensuring all required documents are submitted before the deadline.
