About Organisation
The Sir Halley Stewart Trust is a charitable foundation supporting innovative projects intended to prevent human suffering. Its funding priorities include medical, social and religious initiatives, with education forming a cross-cutting theme. The trust seeks projects that introduce new ideas, develop pioneering approaches or establish foundations for further progress. It places importance on measurable outcomes, responsible safeguarding, equality and effective dissemination of project learning.
About the Grant
The Main Grants Programme supports innovative research and pioneering development projects that align with the trust’s priorities. Grants can support salary contributions or project costs and may run for one, two or three years. The programme generally considers requests between £5,001 and £60,000, with exceptional awards potentially reaching £80,000. The trust’s application process includes an eligibility test, an expression of interest and a full application for projects invited to proceed.
Who can Apply?
Applications must be submitted through eligible UK charitable organisations, even when project activities take place internationally. Community Interest Companies may be considered when partnering with a UK charity. Projects should be innovative and designed to prevent, rather than simply alleviate, human suffering. Social applications have additional eligibility requirements, including an organisational income limit of £3 million per year.
How to Apply?
Complete the eligibility test on the trust’s website. Eligible organisations can then submit an expression of interest and wait for confirmation before preparing a full application. Follow the trust’s guidance on project design, evaluation, safeguarding, dissemination and financial documentation.
