The ReCIPE Programme supports research examining the relationships between conflict, economic performance and development, particularly in countries affected by conflict, fragility and severe development challenges. The programme aims to generate high-quality evidence that can contribute to policy discussions and improve understanding of development challenges in conflict-affected settings. ReCIPE encourages multidisciplinary and international collaboration, including partnerships between researchers from lower- and higher-income countries. Through research grants and related activities, the programme helps researchers investigate important questions using primary and secondary data while connecting academic research with real-world policy challenges.
About the Grant
The ReCIPE Programme PhD Research Grants provide up to £15,000 per project for research addressing conflict, economic performance and development issues with clear policy relevance to ReCIPE Focus Countries. Funding can support activities such as data collection, research assistance, research data, research stipends, justified teaching buyouts and travel to fieldwork locations. Both primary and secondary research are eligible. The programme particularly encourages research examining the relationship between conflict and economic performance, multidisciplinary approaches and international research collaboration. Projects should demonstrate how their findings could generate useful evidence and lessons for policymakers working in conflict-affected or fragile settings.
Who can Apply?
The programme primarily supports researchers undertaking PhD-level research. Principal investigators must hold a PhD or be enrolled in a PhD programme, although exceptions may be considered for applicants with strong academic or policy-relevant research records. PhD students must provide a letter of support from their PhD supervisor, submitted within two weeks of the application deadline. Multidisciplinary teams and collaboration between researchers from lower- and higher-income countries are encouraged. Projects should have clear relevance to ReCIPE Focus Countries. Researchers based at Russian institutions are not eligible. Applicants must also address ethical, safety and security considerations where relevant.
How to Apply?
Develop a focused research question related to conflict, development or economic performance and identify its relevance to a ReCIPE Focus Country. Prepare your research methodology, policy-relevance statement, timeline and realistic budget. Address ethics and security risks where applicable. PhD students should arrange the required supervisor support letter. Complete the application with all supporting documentation and submit it according to the ReCIPE Programme’s official instructions before 29 September 2026.
