About Organisation

Wild Animal Initiative is dedicated to advancing the emerging field of wild animal welfare science. Recognising that most animals live in the wild and that their wellbeing is often overlooked, the organisation strives to understand the key factors influencing their quality of life. Through scientific research, it seeks to develop responsible and effective methods to reduce suffering and improve welfare for wild animals worldwide.

About the Grant

The Wild Animal Initiative’s Challenge Grants fund pioneering research that opens new directions for wild animal welfare science. These grants target projects addressing underexplored yet critical research questions often neglected by other funders. Projects should demonstrate novelty, methodological rigour, and high relevance to priority research areas. Each round focuses on specific themes, supporting impactful, data-driven studies led by experienced principal investigators aiming to advance the field.

Who can Apply?

Eligible applicants include principal investigators affiliated with universities, government agencies, or recognised research institutions. NGOs may apply if registered in the country where fieldwork occurs. Projects must include collaborators residing in all fieldwork locations. The grants are open to standalone research or the addition of a wild animal welfare component to existing projects. Funding covers direct research costs and, when justified, other expenses such as salaries or stipends. Early-career researchers may also apply for mentorship under WAI Fellowships.
